After securing a thrilling victory against Canada in the opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, the U.S. is set to face Pakistan in its second match of the tournament. Thursday's match will be Pakistan's first game in this edition.

Vice captain of the U.S. Cricket Team, Aaron Jones, expressed confidence with the team in an April interview with USA TODAY, adding that the current squad is "really strong" and that all players share a great dynamic. Jones was awarded the Man of the Match in the opening game after scoring 94 runs off 40 balls.

"One thing I think is really strong for us is that we have guys from all over the world," Jones said at the time. "And you can use that as something to truly be a strength for us."

Jones added that all players on the team are always open to sharing feedback and insights into the strengths and weaknesses of their peers.

"We have a really good unit," he said.

While the tournament marks the U.S.'s debut in T20 cricket, Pakistan has previously won the T20 World Cup in 2009 and made it to the final in the previous edition in 2022, losing to England in the last match.

Pakistan team captain Babar Azam, in a statement, said that he and his team are "extremely confident going into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024."

“It is now my career objective and target to win the T20 World Cup and present the title to the passionate people of Pakistan, who have always stood behind us like a rock in good and not so very good days," Azam said.

On Wednesday, one day before the match, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced that Imad Wasim will not be playing the match as "he has been advised rest by the PCB Medical Team," due to ongoing discomfort in his right rib cage.
